PTI vows to hold protest on Oct 15 if meeting with Imran Khan disallowed

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has vowed to hold its protest in Islamabad on October 15 if the party is not allowed a meeting with founder Imran Khan in jail.

The party revealed its condition for calling off its protest after calls to reconsider its protest as it clashed with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit being held in Islamabad on Oct 15-16.

PTI leader Hammad Azhar released a video statement and said he would himself lead the peaceful protest despite severe threats to his life.

He called upon all its office-bearers to reach Islamabad on Oct 15 at all costs if the government did not allow lawyers and doctors access to party founder in Jail.

“The ticket-holders and office-bearers not reaching Islamabad on Oct 15 will be stripped off their privileges and offices,” he warned. Azhar recalled that Adiala Jail doors were opened on the day of protest in Sangjani. “Why can’t the Adiala Jail doors be opened now,”he asked.

The statement came amid concerns over the health condition of Imran Khan and after the party’s call for a meeting with the incarcerated leader failed to receive a positive response from the government.

Earlier, Hammad Azhar in a tweet asked the government why it was not allowing a meeting with Imran Khan and denying his legal right, if it was so concerned about the SCO summit.

He said the “fake” government was hatching a conspiracy against PTI. “Why is the government trying to keep the nation in the dark about the health and well-being of Imran Khan?” he asked.

PTI’s provincial information secretary Shaukat Basra said the government was targeting Imran Khan and the PTI in order to pass the proposed “unconstitutional” amendments through parliament.

The PTI spokesperson also dispelled reports that there were differences within the party leadership over holding the October 15 rally.

It was earlier reported that there were differences between PTI leadership on going ahead with the protest rally as it clashed with the SCO summit.

It was reported that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur opposed the protest, while Hammad Azhar and Salman Akram Raja advocated for holding the protest.

The PTI has written a letter to the Ministry of Interior requesting a meeting to be scheduled with the former prime minister. However, the party has not received any response despite assurances by the interior minister.
